Our visit to this year’s Conference on Language and Law of the Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (BDÜ) was more than worthwhile. Not only the presentations themselves but also the sideline conversations with colleagues made for valuable insights and plenty of food for thought. Few things seem to keep translators on their toes these days as much as the evolutionary leap machine translation has taken over the past years. Needless to say that this development, which in itself is a great thing, causes much concern – if not existential fears – in the industry. At the same time there is a broad consensus that at least highly qualified specialist translators will continue to have their role in the global interpersonal communication. They will need to sharpen their profiles and, at the same time, expand their offerings to include consulting and revision services. They will have to embrace new technologies und keep an eye on data protection. Finally, it is safe to say that only translators with a high level of specialisation and access to a strategic professional network have reason to expect a bright future. As for expanding our network, the event also turned out to be of great avail, by the way.

It’s been five years since our last visit to JURAcon. About time for us to put in an appearance at the networking and job fair for legal professionals again. On 10 May we will be looking to get in contact with lawyers and law firm staff at the touring trade fair, the current leg of which is to be held in Frankfurt. Several of the commercial law firms present have found their way onto our client list already, others will hopefully follow. In any case, we are looking forward to experience interesting encounters and lively chats as we have on past occasions.

From 03 March 2016 - 14 March 2016 we will be doing a little further training marathon consisting of three advanced training seminars held in Karlsruhe, Munich and Berlin. Topics will include English Real Estate Law, Contract Law and Corporate Law. During that week we will be available on a reduced basis. According to the urgency of your request it might be one of our partners who will be getting in touch.

This year our Christmas holidays coincide with the Berlin school holidays. This means the office will be closed from 22 December 2014 until (and including) 2 January 2015. Any emails reaching us during this period of time will be attended to on 5 January 2015. We wish all our clients and colleagues a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

From the 10th to the 25th of July, Erichsen & Partner will be on summer vacation. During this period we cannot be contacted by telephone. Email enquiries will, however, be responded to but not as quickly as usual. As our vacation overlaps with that of our closest cooperation partner, we will not be able to attend to any urgent translation requests between the 10th and the 16th. As of the 28th of July we will once again be reachable on short notice and will be able to deal with requests as usual.

1 July 2014

For over one year Erichsen & Partner have regularly been working together with a British partner office in the energy industry. Our main client is an interest group for whom we translate texts predominantly revolving around political energy issues. As part of our collaborative work, we have been able to come to grips very well both with the content and language of the technical, political and legal aspects of the subject matter. Additionally, our network has expanded and now includes several experienced specialist colleagues. In a nutshell, we will soon start to advertise our services in this area, and we will place special emphasis on energy law to put this new field of activity in line with our general focus.

As every year, we at Erichsen & Partner will use the festive period to treat ourselves to some downtime. As such, the office will be closed from 23 December 2013 to 3 January 2014. From 6 January we will be back at work and available at short notice again. Until then we wish you a Merry Christmas and – depending on what you prefer – a cosy or a lively New Year’s Eve!

We hope 2013 has begun well for you. Erichsen & Partner has experienced a solid start to the new year and is settling well into its new location in the Neukölln district of Berlin. However, due to an unusually busy January, as well as the move of course, we have not yet been able to offer our clients our best wishes for this year. Now, although belatedly, we would still like to wish all clients a happy and successful new year.

Erichsen & Partner is moving and as a result will have limited landline availability for the first two weeks of the new year (i.e. until 16 January). It will also be impossible for us to receive faxes during this period. Emails will be answered promptly as normal. Regular clients will also be able to contact us in urgent matters using the usual mobile numbers. Full landline service will be restored, using the existing numbers, as of 16 January.

The Berlin start up, founded in 2006, really struck a rich vein of demand with its innovative business concept. And not only in Germany. Its continuing success story has since led the company to expand its online market place for unique, hand-made items into numerous other European countries. We have been proud to support DaWanda’s legal department since mid-2012 with equally unique and hand-made translations.

Since this innovative Austrian company opened its Berlin office on Kurfürstendamm in November 2011, we have been supporting their legal department with the translations they need due to their strongly internationally oriented business concept. The innovative auction house sells antiques and rarities ranging from valuable jewellery to art, antique furniture to fine whiskey in traditional-style auctions, run by licensed auctioneers via online video streaming. An extraordinary idea and a very interesting topic for us as translators. In fact, we are starting to feel quite at home in the auction room!

As 2011 draws to a close, we would like to inform you that our festive break this year will be from 22 December until 2 January. As every late autumn, Erichsen & Partner are preparing their university schedules at the legal faculty of the Berlin Humboldt University, with courses specifically selected to strengthen our expertise. We have decided to use this year’s winter semester for some fundamental research. Our timetable includes introductory lectures dealing with the historic and present legal systems in England and the US. For the first time, three colleagues will attend different courses in order to later share their newly gained knowledge with the others. We are looking forward to interesting days on campus.

For three years running, our visits to the JuraCon Berlin fair have proven to be a valuable means of establishing contact with potential clients. This is one of the reasons why Erichsen & Partner will be attending the Frankfurt chapter of this popular job fair for young legal professionals on May 4th. A further reason is that the fair provides an opportunity for face-to-face discussion of matters which deadline constraints often simply do not leave time for, such as determination of requirements, lawyers’ expectations, or general questions that are not related to any specific project. We are looking forward to interesting discussions!

The beginning of this month has seen Erichsen & Partner's admission to the Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (Bundesverband der Dolmetscher und Übersetzer). Germany's largest association of professional linguists, the BDÜ represents the interests of our profession towards industry, politics and administrative institutions. At the same time, there is a wide range of possibilities for professional interchange, training and networking available to its members. As the admission procedure includes the verification of professional qualifications the membership is also a sure mark of quality. After all, the title of translator is not legally protected. We are looking forward to attending training courses and hope to establish contacts and fruitful cooperation with other members.

Building on the success of previous years, we plan to attend the careers fair for employers and young professionals in the legal sphere in the Henry Ford Building of Berlin’s Free University on 24 November. We heard about the fair as a result of attending lectures at the Humboldt University. In past years the feedback has been consistently positive. We hope to meet one or two potential new clients who may be interested in our services this year.

We are continuing our attendance at the legal faculty of the Berlin Humboldt University in this winter semester. Part of our timetable is the course Internet Law held by attorney at law Dr C. Renner. In addition, Leif Erichsen attends a lecture on the subject of Trade and Company Law held by Prof. Dr. H.-P. Schwintowski.

The new Erichsen & Partner website is now online. Welcome! A few words on the content by way of introduction: Because we are usually recommended by clients due to our high degree of specialisation, or approach potential new clients directly, we have given little consideration to search engine optimization. It was more important to us to present relevant information about ourselves and our services on the site in an appealing and intuitive way. From a visual perspective, we have aimed to convey an authentic picture of ourselves, so that our customers get an idea of who they are dealing with. We think our efforts have paid off. We are, however, always open to feedback and suggestions for improvement.
